Dream Theater

Dream Theater is a "progressive rock" band with roots in Long Island where I'm from, which I didn't really know until later. This playlist contains 2-3 songs from every album starting with their 1992 debut. All the way at the end of their 1994 album Awake is a song titled "Space-Dye Vest" which is probably my favorite Dream Theater song. This song gets really deep into the emotion of tormenting depression and longing for a person or a time. "I'll never be open again" echoes a hopelessness I have felt at times in my life. It turns out this sad composition by keyboardist Kevin Moore was his parting gift to the band just as he departed for a more private life. I'll explore his work at a later date; the man is a genius.

The song "Disappear" is up there as another favorite that captures loss of a loved one and having to move on. The eleven minute "Endless Sacrifice" and the thirteen minute "The Great Debate" are epic narratives.

Dream Theater is a mood for sure. There's a lot of sadness in their songs, but there's a lot of hope too. They are excellent musicians and they're still doing what they love. A+
